2009 NBA Playoffs Round 2 Game 1: Denver Nuggets vs Dallas Mavericks Game Thread

Game day is finally here so I thought I would pass along some encouraging stats to help calm the nerves.

As I am sure you all know the Denver Nuggets are riding a 13 game home winning streak.

According to Elias the Nuggets have ten straight wins in game one of a playoff series where they possess home court advantage.  The only team who has a longer active streak of home court game one wins in a row is the Chicago Bulls with 18.

A team who swept the regular season series of at least three games against a playoff opponent has never lost the postseason series (25-0).

No team has won more than one game one on the road in any single postseason since 1999 when the Knicks did it three times (Dallas won game on in San Antonio).

The team that wins game one in a seven game series goes on to win that series 78.9% of the time.

I think it is safe to say the Nuggets have a lot going for them both on the floor and from a historical standpoint.  They just need to get the job done.

So far the Nuggets are switching too many screens and the bigs (Kenyon, Nene and Melo) are not able to take the contact from Dirk and still challenge his shot.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Nuggets do not have that cohesiveness on defense that they did against New Orleans.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Kenyon sends Dirk an early message with the shove out of bounds and that message is so far I have not been able to guard you.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Dirk looks like he is on a mission.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Karl going to the bench early and Josh Howard is loving having Kleiza guarding him.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Nuggets offense is far too one-on-one right now.

  • runningdonut

It’s Kleiza. I wish he would magically become good and able to defend Josh Howard but I kind of doubt that. Also, if Barea keeps starting for them I dunno how much we need Dahntay in the starting five

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Yea runningdonut, it would be nice to have someone starting opposite of Barea who can take advantage of him defensively.

  • magster

Dallas has come out strong from both of its timeouts.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

As badly as Dallas is outplaying the Nuggets right now Denver is only down seven, but I did not expect to be having to play that mind game that early in this game.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Chauncey is not taking care of the ball.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

    Good point magster.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Dallas is cooling off, but Denver has never heated up.

  • runningdonut

That’s what I was thinking Jeremy, if Jones starts against him he should look to contribute some offense as well

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

I do not understand why Denver is so content to switch. That is not what I was hoping to see out of them after the way they defended screens against the Hornets.

  • magster

As bad as that period was, I don’t see Denver having another 16 point quarter the rest of the game.

  • runningdonut

We can;t survive with LK on Josh. No chance

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Please do not let Howard be hurt badly. Dallas deserves to have him healthy.

  • runningdonut

+1 Jeremy, I wrote that Kleiza comment right before he went down. He was owning LK

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

I love Wright guarding Melo. Get him the ball.

  • magster

I want to beat the Mavs at their best. I hope Howard is OK.

  • runningdonut

JR needs to keep his composure this game

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Birdman is the new Dirk stopper!

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Denver has woken up. Great energy.

  • runningdonut

AC providing some defense and energy so far

  • magster

    3 fouls on Melo.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Nene looks like a completely different player than against New Orleans.

  • runningdonut

    Switch switch switch

    Son of a switch!

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

    Lol runningdonut!

  • runningdonut

We are getting to the line but failing to make anything again.

    Sigh

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

30 point quarter with over a minute left.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Refs not bailing out Dirk. Good for them.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Not a great quarter from Denver, but a very good one. Defense still a little soft. We are going to have to get used to the switches.

  • magster

    NENE!!!!

    Who needs Melo anyway?

  • runningdonut

Yeah, but we had a pathetic first quarter. Birdman brought us back

  • OneMoreSucka

Dallas with no answer for Nene or the 3 guard lineup. I’d love to see that exploited more, despite Melo being in foul trouble.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

    Halftime Stats:

Pace Factor: 94.2 – Close to an average game in Denver, but the pace has been pushed up by the lack of offensive rebonds only five combined in the first half.

Defensive Efficiency: 99.8 – With the Mavs shooting 50% I did not expect it to be so low.

Offensive Efficiency: 108.2 – Great considering how bad they were in the first quarter.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

When Melo has been on the court I have loved how he has played.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

    Melo guarding Kidd. Interesting.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Kidd is hot from three. Not a good sign.

  • magster

Time for Birdman and JR. The energy isn’t there right now.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Yeah magster, they gave up that lead fast.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Just like against the Hornets, it seems like the Nuggets are going to go on a big run soon, but if they do, Dallas is not going to fold the way New Orleans did.

  • magster

    It’s a good thing Karl doesn’t listen to me. A 5-0 run.

  • runningdonut

Melo is visibly frustrated and hasn’t taken a good shot all game

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Denver got a few stops, but could not capitalize. That would have been the run I thought was coming.

  • magster

Yeah, if we lose, these missed opportunities and the missed freethrows in the first half are responsible.

  • runningdonut

True Jeremy, the offense certainly hasn’t rewarded the defensive effort this quarter

  • magster

    I love our bench!

  • magster

OK Nugs, start the 4th with a run and break their spirit.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Sure wish the Nuggets were up by more (as always), but the way they have been playing I will take the seven point lead heading into the fourth.

  • runningdonut

Yeah, we are in a good position despite some selfish play on offense. Melo needs to regain his composure for the 4th and step up like JR did

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

    3rd Quarter Stats:

Pace has jumped up to 106.8

    Defensive Efficiency down to 93.6

Offensive Efficiency down to 102.4, but both teams are shooting over 50%.

  • magster

Don’t like Melo’s selfishness, eventhough he scored on all his shots in this mini run.

    Dallas sure calls timeouts quickly.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

I am building a statue of Birdman and Carter in my front yard after this game.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

I see a fine in Mark Cuban’s future because of the free throw discrepancy (30-11 with 5:52 left in the game).

  • runningdonut

It’s because we have rejected everything and they are afraid to go at the rim

  • magster

Nuggets in 5. We just wear teams out.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Come on guys, this game is not over.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

OK, after that three by Melo it is now.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

I checked out a game thread at a Mavs site and their fans are going crazy over the refs.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

The way the Nuggets are dominating the second half at home is awesome.

  • magster

Thanks for the thread Jeremy! See you Tuesday.

  • http://www.roundballminingcompany.com jeremy

Great win. I am feeling very confident.

  • OneMoreSucka

Melo with a FABULOUS night despite foul trouble.

  • runningdonut

    Our bench rules

  • fats

I think playing dirk straight up kind of sucked dallas into playing their o through him too much. if they vary their o more they probably don’t fall apart like they did in the 4th.

  • jakester

Oh my, Kidd had some awful turnovers in that game. It was funny hearing the TV crew saying “Denver is playing at it’s best” when both CB and Melo were under 10 points at the time.

Birdman on dirk is the surprise of Game 1. I was worried about the Kmart matchup but birdman seems to really bother the big german. And AC came up big on both ends. And JR obviously has a lot to prove and tonight he passed the test.

But the real revelation was Nene. Those dunks in the second quarter were as dominant as I’ve seen the kid in awhile. If he continues like that for the rest of the series, there won’t be much Dallas can do.

  • BeefySwats

    GO NUGGETS!!!!!

I was driving back from Wyoming while the game was on but it is unbelievable how well the Nugs played this game one. Nene was on fire. Melo had 23 points in 29 minutes, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. AMAZING.

Jeremy you need to go to one of these games. I know I am going to either 2 or 5, just need to figure out which. Thank you so much once again for the exhaustive previews.

  • king_couttsy

Hopefully there won’t be a game 5 for you to go to, BeefySwats – with the way Denver has been playing, anything is possible!

Another great win – just looking forward to controlling Game 2 a little better than we did this one…

  • OneMoreSucka

I don’t know why Mavs fans would be upset at the lopsided whistle….Dallas shot mostly jumpers and Denver mostly attacked, it’s 7th grade fundamentals to know that if you attack the paint, you’re going to get fouled more.

I will say that Kmart was lucky that he didn’t get ejected for shoving Dirk, or at least a flagrant 1, but at the same time I’m so glad that he did do that.

  • BeefySwats

You know what I’m actually angry about after that win? We missed 11 free throws. Eleven. We shot 70% from the line and if we even hit half of those misses we blow the Mavs out by 20.

We have to make the chances we earn.

Also, cool note – Kidd committed EIGHT turnovers. He committed just 3 all SERIES against the Spurs. Denver’s defense continues to play stellar with 11 steals and 15 blocks.
