Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown tour coming to Denver

On Saturday, May 7, at 4 p.m. the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown tour will be coming to Denver’s Civic Center Park.

Here are some of the details I received via e-mail:

Sprite and the NBA are touring the country in search of the best amateur dunker, and Denver is the second stop in their quest. If last year’s competition is any indication, area dunkers will showcase some extremely impressive skills, including Tomahawks, Windmills, Alley Oops … and maybe even something no one has seen before.

The competition is open to all local dunkers ages 18 and up and will be judged by a panel that includes NBA legend Darryl Dawkins and dunker Carlos “Los” Smothers, the runner–up in the 2010 Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown.

The first-place winner will receive $1,000 and a chance to compete for $10,000 and the title at the 2012 Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown Finals.

Denver is the second stop in the eight–city Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown tour that will feature fan activities, appearances by NBA stars — past and present — as well as an array of fan activities — autograph sessions included — and of course, monstrous dunks. In addition to the national tour, contestants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico can submit videos of their best dunks to enter the competition. Videos featuring dunks from 10 semi-finalists (eight tour stop winners and two winning online entrants) will be featured at www.nba.com/dunk. Voters will then select the four finalists who will compete at the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown Finals.

From what I can tell, this is going to be pretty cool. I have nothing planned this Saturday, so right now I’m leaning towards attending. After all, how can you pass up a chance to see some nasty dunks and meet the godfather of the dunk, Chocolate Thunder, in person? If I manage to make it, I’ll try and bring my camera so that I can post some pictures later on.

Thanks for posting this. The Denver event should be real cool. Kasper was recently interviewed/featured in the CBS special Dunks of the year. Jonesy often gets labeled good white dunker but he’s a real solid dunker. There’s also a few other local standouts that will be competing.
