Rumor: Nuggets offering Faried, Chandler, former Nugget not on roster for Love

According to Steve Bulpett of The Boston Herald, the Denver Nuggets have made a worthwhile offer to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Love. Per Bulpett’s twitter account:

Screen Shot 2014-06-18 at 11.11.58 PM

How Denver would go about obtaining Arron Afflalo, then subsequently flipping him to Minnesota, is still unknown. Though Bulpett points out how Denver’s first-round pick in the upcoming draft wouldn’t be sent to the Timberwolves, he doesn’t deny that it could go to the Magic, giving them back-to-back picks at 11 and 12, as well as three lottery selections overall. If this were the case, Orlando would assist the Nuggets in bringing a star player to Denver on the final year of his contract in exchange for a first-round draft pick for the second time in three years, with Arron Afflalo acting as a trade chip each time.

Though the above tweets are only rumors at this point, this news remains unequivocally exciting, and somewhat scary, from a Nuggets fan’s standpoint. While Kevin Love is exactly the type of player Denver has been searching for since the departure of Carmelo Anthony, his contract instability should not be overlooked. If the Nuggets are serious about gambling on Love they must have additional moves lined up down the road, as the team’s current cast of players likely won’t be enough to storm deep into the playoffs nor will it be enough to entice Love to re-sign once his current deal expires.

Regardless of what develops, this storyline certainly adds a whole new and electrifying dimension to the Nuggets’ upcoming draft and ensuing free agency period. As always, stay tuned to RMC for updates.

If there’s a way Denver can get Love without giving up Gallo, then that is a home run (unlike the Rockies tonight….). A big 3 of Lawson-Gallo-Love? Yes please. If Gallo just comes back to 80% of his production that 3 is a virtual lock for the playoffs. Possible second round team too (depending on matchup). Would it put them past OKC or the Spurs? Probably not. But really, would that tandem be that much worse than Houston, Portland, or hell, even the Clippers? And if they could make the second round, with Love’s bird rights, Denver (IMO) would have a really good shot at re-signing him.

Whether or not this actually happens, I gotta tip my cap to Josh and Tim. Their last offseason was terrible but it appears that they ARE trying to make serious moves. Whether people want to admit it or not, the Nuggets roster currently constructed is going nowhere. You need stars to win in this league, and Love IS a star. No, he’s not LeBron. But he’s still pretty damn good. Minnesota’s point differential without him on the floor was worse than Milwaukee’s.

    • LBJ

Depending on what we need to give up to get AAA, I would do the rumored deal. I’ll wait to tip my cap to Joshy and Timmy until after it is complete.

Finally, Joshy had better be ready to pony up a max contract to Love – no messing around with partial guarantees. I still think one of the reasons that Love wants out of Minnesota is their failure to offer him a full max deal.

    • CD Pascual

Oh please, the injuries are just what made last offseason look terrible, but I know we’ll agree to disagree. But I’m with getting Love as long as the Nuggets don’t gut out their roster.

      • James Duff

the hickson contract is what made last offseason look terrible, along with not getting adequate supporting pieces set up at SG

  • Dinosaur Dave

I would much rather go after David West for the consistency and leadership. Kevin Love is always injured and will cost Denver a lot more.

    • Heisenberg

Other than hand problems last year he’s been pretty healthy. I doubt they’d be able to get West anyway.

      • Dinosaur Dave

I dunno, I just reckon West has that tough guy presence and locker room leadership that I don’t really see in Kevin Love.

        • Heisenberg

He’s a decent player, but he’s also turning 34. Indiana seems much more likely to trade Stephenson or (if they can) Hibbert.

If they can’t get Love I’d rather see them go after Monroe on the Pistons. Denver needs long term value more than anything.

          • Scott

I think lance would be a perfect fit on this team. Imagine if free agency works out perfectly and we land both love and sign Stephenson. Our lineup would look like:

            PG: Ty
            SG: Stephenson
            SF: Gallo
            PF: Love
            C: Moz/McGee

            • Heisenberg

I don’t see how they could get both. Assuming they give up Faried and Chandler (along with the 11th pick) to get Love they wouldn’t have much else left to offer for Lance.

              • John

They wouldn’t be trading for Stephenson, they’d be signing him. He’s an unrestricted free agent this summer.

              • James Duff

they don’t have the cap room, would have to be a sign and trade, which falls back to not having the assets

    • Cullen

Kevin Love is much younger than David West, too. Much more consistent scorer, too.

      Like, 8 years younger.

  • Scott

Was confused for a moment and thought we were trying to get Aaron and Love. That would’ve been dope.

    • James Duff

west also has played for much better teams than love and still hasn’t managed to win anything (outside of making the ECF in a very weak east 2 years in a row)

  • Aaron Durkin

If this happens I will buy season tickets and I dont even live in colorado any longer. The idea of having Love, Lawson, and Gallo on the floor is golden. Plus I hear they would throw in C-brew which would help to shore us up on the D end.

    • James Duff

I don’t think shaw would play someone who gambles as much as brewer to justify taking him back…unless they would take foye

  • CD Pascual

So the Nuggets want Afflalo just to give him away. Nonsense.

    • Heisenberg

Denver doesn’t want Afflalo. They just want Minnesota to want Afflalo.

  • JonnyB

With C. Brew added in I am sold!

    PG: TY – Nate
SG: Foye – C. Brew- Fornier
    SF: Gallo – Q Miller
PF: Love – Hickson – Authur
    C: Mozzy – McGee – Lauvergne

    Love It!

    • LBJ

I don’t think we get C-Brew in this deal. Also, Fours will likely need to a piece in the deal to Orlando to get AAA.

  • Furious_Stylez

Get a deal done. Everyone should be available… even Lawson. The only condition: Love signs his player option, keeping here at least 2 years.

Also remember this: This plan only works if Kronke is willing to back up an Brinks truck to the Pepsi Center. This team will be over the cap. Faried and Chandler cost around $10m combined. Love is due $15.7m next season and $16.7m in ’15-’16.

With the current salaries, that doesn’t leave much money to get other good veteran players unless Kronke is willing to pay the luxury tax. Hopefully JK allows Connolly to cut/buyout players. No reason to go halfway if they’re gonna reshape the roster. Buyout Miller, Randolph and Robinson. Replace them with solid veterans (Livingston, Meeks, Sefalosha, Humphries are a few examples of UFAs) and operate under the assumption that Love is only here for 2 years.

  • Guest

Is this not another Iggy situation? I may be misunderstanding, but Love can opt out of his contract at the end of next season, can’t he? I really don’t see the worth of trading away Faried, who has the potential to be a very good player (and showed signs of that at the end of last season), for a year of Kevin Love. Do we really believe that Love will, unlike most star players, want to stay in Denver?

    • LBJ

I suspect most NBA players are NOT like Melo – preferring endorsements and living in NY or LA over winning. Most great players simply want the opportunity to win. If we can provide that opportunity, they will stay. If not, they will leave. I’ve been to OKC and SA – and there is no way either of those places have any advantage over Denver.

  • Henson

I may be misunderstanding here, but is this not another Iggy situation? Kevin Love can opt out of his contract after next season, can’t he? I don’t see the value of trading away a potentially great player in Faried, who showed signs of that at the end of last season, for a year with Kevin Love. Do we really believe that Love will buck the trend of star NBA players and stay in a market like Denver?

  • Tyler

Sounds like we’re trying to prepare ourselves for tanking for the next few years. I just don’t see Love wanting to stay here when he’s got better chance to win in Houston, GS, etc. Unless Connelly has some secret plan to lure LeBron & Melo to Denver or something completely impossible to happen, I just don’t see Kevin wanting to stay in Denver if we made this trade.

    • Bryan

GS appears to be the new front runner based on the rumor mill (and I suspect they won’t be the last), so I wouldn’t put too much thought into what Love would do or what the Nuggets true intentions are..

      • Tyler

I just now saw that. Giving up KT may be the deciding factor now.

        • Bryan

I think this will be similar to the Melo situation where supposed trade details that keep getting better and better are leaked for a while.

          • Ryan

Yep, looks like GSW is trying to screw us again lol….

  • Bryan

So I just saw the Embid broke his foot and is having surgery on it tomorrow. The talking heads are speculating that he’ll fall because of the Oden Durant situation. I don’t think he’ll fall out of the top 10…but if he did, would you take him at 11?

    • LBJ

Hell, yes! No way he falls that far, though.

    • Cullen

It’s really interesting all the players that could potentially slip down to 11. Talks about Julius Randle slipping because of a foot injury, Embiid as well. It would be unlikely they would slip this far to the Nuggets. But, it wouldn’t be out of the question, at least. Plus, those players sliding could really shake up the trajectory of other players too. Really interested in seeing how this plays out.

      • Ryan

Take Randle or Embiid in a heartbeat at 11, not even a question…

  • Cullen

All bets are off. GSW is now offering Klay Thompson. So, it was a nice 24 hours of dreaming while it lasted.

Also worried about what it would take to get AAA, too.

    • LBJ

The report I saw has GSW getting the #13 pick too. I guess that is for taking the contracts of Barea and Martin. This deal really helps GSW.

      • Cullen

Agreed. Giving Klay would be tough because him and Curry make a killer back court and he plays great defense… but getting Love, Martin (a serviceable scorer) and the 13th pick? Yeah, that’s a good trade for them.

        • LBJ

Even though he is massively overpaid, Barea is a decent backup for Curry also.

          • Cullen

Oh for sure, his contract is garbage.

But yeah, Barea to play decent minutes for Curry and picking another role player at 13? I mean, getting Stauskis, Young, or LaVine, etc. would be a GREAT deal. Kind of scary, thinking how competitive the West already is.

Oh, and keeping Harrison Barnes is nice too, a lot of potential in that kid.

They would be fixing their biggest problem: A lack of depth.

Not too scary though, I’m not convinced Kerr will be worth anything as a coach.

  • Cullen

I really want to see an updated mock draft with Embiid now being injured and the Cavs dumping on his stock and the top 3 not wanting to touch him.

    • sharkbait

Things will get real interesting around pick #4 with Orlando wanting a PG if Exum is off the board. Do they take Embiid or go with Marcus Smart? This could give the Nuggets an opportunity to rebuild quickly. What if they offered Lawson, Chandler and/or one of the PF’s, one of the SG’s and the 2 second round picks for picks #4 and #12.
      We take:
      #4 Embiid
      #11 Payton
#12 Stauskas, Harris, Lavine or McDermott (Whoever they like best)
Resign Faried, still have Gallinari and viable centers to let Embiid heal properly. That group would have a lot of potential.

      • LBJ

Jut saw the new mock – Embiid drops to Orlando at 4. 76ers take Exum at 3.
Orlando isn’t winning any time soon anyway.

  • Trevor

Kevin Love is one of the few players I would leverage the house for if I was running things. Skilled bigs are just to rare in the league.

    • Bryan

How many times have the T’wolves made the playoffs since they drafted him?

      • Cullen

A single player cannot take a team to the playoffs, especially in the Western conference. Especially in that laughable organization.

        • Ryan

Bad body language, no defense, complaining about your organization, and injuries don’t help your team win much either…

          • Cullen

Lol we already have a PF that doesn’t play defense very well, why not gamble on a legendary scoring rebound heavy guy? Plus, we aren’t exactly giving up the farm for him. Latest offer: Kenneth Faried, Wilson Chandler, 11th pick, and we get K-Love and Kevin Martin. I’d take that.

            • Ryan

Agreed, I just think the Wolves will want more than what we have to offer and if Love did miraculously come here, there’s no guarantee that it would make the Nuggets significantly better…

  • Darius

Make this move happen! Throw in Fournier if you have to! We might as well go all out and have a year of actual relevance in the playoffs and then many years of rebuilding if he were to leave opposed to another decade of mediocre basketball holding onto the pieces that “may or may not” turn into future stars. This trade would just speed up the process of an inevitable rebuild! Imagine a starting lineup of Lawson, Foye, Gallinari, Love, Mozgov/McGee and NateRob as 6th man! Very dangerous come playoff time

  • Nugman

Love has greats stats, but I’m not sure he’s a cornerstone player. Nuggets shouldn’t give too much and need to get him to sign an extension. I have to assume all these teams are going to require an extension. For any of them give that much to rent a player for a year or two is ridiculous. I can’t believe any of them would do that.

  • Cullen

Latest reports have Chandler, Faried, and the 11th pick for Kevin Love and Kevin Martin. Martin’s contract is absolutely awful, but I’d still take it. Think about what we are giving up and what we could potentially get in return. Make it happen!

    • Cullen

Disclaimer: Would still be surprised if GSW doesn’t get him.

      • Furious_Stylez

Agreed. Now that Thompson is being offered, the Nuggs have zero chance of getting Love. The Wolves want Thompson, but will take Barnes and a 1st rounder as a consolation prize.

The Warriors were already better than the Nuggets, so this trade does nothing on that front. However, we better hope Minny doesn’t get Klay. He, along with Lee, dramatically improves the TWolves and makes them another team the Nuggets have to really compete with to get back to the postseason. Rubio, Thompson, Brewer, Lee, and Pekovic is a pretty decent squad (barring no injuries).

        • Heisenberg

Is Thompson really worth taking on Lee’s contract? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have Klay. But that Lee contract is awful.

          • Furious_Stylez

That Lee contract is atrocious, but this isn’t a normal trade scenario. Love is gonna bolt regardless, so Minny probably doesn’t see a huge difference between the 2 players and would be willing to take the deal. If you check the numbers, both contracts are very similar. The Lee contract is expiring in 2 years and is cheaper than Love’s in the final year. The big part of the deal is Thompson. He’s an upgrade from Martin and gives Rubio a solid shooter and defender in the backcourt. They are far less excited about getting Barnes, who is the exact same guy as Brewer.

            • Heisenberg

Klay just strikes me as good, not great. Potentially unloading that Martin contract would really help, though.

I think Chicago’s the bigger threat. 16 and 19 picks plus Gibson and Butler. They might have to take on Boozer for salary purposes but his contract is only one year.

        • Cullen

The GSW deal is less good for Minny than initially thought, though. Having to give up the 13th pick in addition to Love, Martin and Barea for Klay and that Lee contract is atrocious. I personally think Minny would be giving up too much. Not saying our deal would be better, but damn.

  • gallogallo88

I am very pessimistic on this move and I am 90% sure this is a one-year rental.. Even with the Lawson-Love-Gallo core, it would be hard to go out in the first round. We will still have the same problems in defense. I say keep the 11th pick and draft Harris.

    • uh_infinity

So am I. I’m seeing this as the Nuggets opportunity to get rid of two players, one that will be seeking a payday in Faried. Then not having to deal with signing the 11th draft pick, and ridding themselves of another high dollar contract in Love after this coming season.

  • Furious_Stylez

If Denver can get Afflalo for the 11th pick, as rumored, shouldn’t the Nuggs FO pull the trigger on that deal now regardless of the Love trade?

Number 11 is nice and all, but Afflalo is a way better SG than when he initially left. The 11th pick doesn’t normally become a Superstar (it’s possible, but not likely). He’d be a huge upgrade for this team.

    Thoughts?

    • Heisenberg

No thanks. Afflalo’s stats are a bit inflated from being on a bad team. He doesn’t really make the Nuggets that much better either.

I’d rather have Stephenson or Monroe if they’re going to trade the pick (for someone other than Love).
