Hakim Warrick UFA

By:  eric.yates

Hakim Warrick (Melo’s teammate at Syracuse) is now a UFA after Memphis rescinded its qualifying offer. He is the perfect candidate to be a backup PF. He’s long, athletic, still young, a good scorer and defender.

He can be had for cheap too. Memphis’s offer was only $3.3 million, which the Nuggets could easily cover in a sign and trade. We could even offer Kleiza using the Iverson trade exception. This has to happen, right? Makes too much sense not to.

I know Melo would be on board.

I think we need to pursue him. I like Warrick’s game, and having him as a backup to play the 3 or 4 rather than Kleiza would be great. We already have our 3 point shots in Melo, JR, and Chauncey. Kleiza is defensively challenged, short(ish) and wants more PT anyway. I think Warrick would be a great fit in Denver, especially with an athletic PG like Lawson and his past history with Melo.

Plus he can RUN — very athletic guy, finishes strong, can hit the mid-range jumper when open. If we could get him at or around the $3 mil mark, that would be a great insurance policy… he can put up big numbers when he gets minutes, so should K-Mart go down for a few games, he’d be a capable starter.

And yeah, I’m still on the “jettison Kleiza” bandwagon… upside is small with that guy.

Ah crap, well it looks like he’s considering a $2-mil biannual exception offer from Cleveland… unbelievable. Wish the Nugs would’ve gotten on this sooner. The other teams he’s apparently talking to are the Bucks and the 76ers… decision to come soon.

Steve Novak is sitting out there as well… dude’s one of the most dead-eye shooters in the league and would be a great change of pace player from our other bigs.

Yep, Warrick signed by the Bucks today… he’ll probably start there, so that’s a no-brainer for him.
