The Denver Nuggets have annonced that Sonny Weems has been recalled from the Colorado 14ers. Weems has posted some very impressive games during his second stint with the team. Over the ten games he played in March following his assignment on March 6 he has averaged 21.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists on 53.8% shooting including an improved 34.8% (8-23) from behind the arc. Weems did foul out twice in those ten games and had five fouls in a third and he turned the ball over 3.2 times per game. Yes, I did the math.
I was hoping to get an eyewitness report on him again towards the end of the season as I did when he was first assigned to the 14ers, but now it appears I will not get that chance. The 14ers regular season ends on Saturday, April 11.
I am not sure why Weems was recalled today. He is not being called up due to injury or other need. I suspect the Nuggets are pleased with his perofrmance and want him to close out the season practicing with the big boys. We talked about the Nuggets’ financial status for next season yesterday and the Nuggets probably want to know if Weems will be ready to provide cheap minutes for them next season.
In other press release news the NBA has announced their first court dedication in India. The league has done a great job of expanding in China and if they can make inroads in India they will then be able to reach one third of the world’s population in just those two countries alone.
The NBA has also announced that Springfield, MA, the birthplace of basketball, will have a new D-League team playing there next season. However, they will have the rights to the Anaheim Arsenal team name and colors while the Anaheim group will have the right to retain players from the current Arsenal squad to continue to play in Anaheim.
The Springfield team is owned by private investors, HWS Basketball, LLC, and not any individula NBA team.
I was getting worried about Sonny. We are linked with him financially until the end of next season and in this climate $900,000 is a big investment particularly with the cap shrinking next year. It would be great if he could contribute. You would have to say he would be among the more disappointing rookies from the last class.
